Intensely gemmy, red sphalerite on a sugary quartz plate (on matrix) from a 2020 find at the Shuikoushan Ore Field, Changning Co., Hengyang, Hunan, China.
There are 4 main sphalerite clusters with well-formed, twinned, and terminated crystals. The largest sphalerite crystal is 10mm across one face.
The quartz overlaying the matrix is like a sunset; with tones ranging from purpley-red (quartz over sphalerite) to orange (iron staining). Its a very pretty backdrop to the main, vibrant red sphalerite.
Very minimal damage overall, with just 3 periphary crystals broken and negligible contact damage on one of the larger sphalerites.
Measures roughly 7.5” x 5” x .75” thick. Will come with a display stand.
On a personal note- this type of “drops of strawberry jelly” sphalerite is what caused me to fall in love with this mineral!
